Service Description

The team at Maine Farm and Sea Cooperative will work with your new or existing food business at any point along the food system: from growers looking for institutional markets to institution chefs seeking the best mix of local products to meet their budget. Our goal is to maximize the amounts of local foods in order to build a resilient Maine economy and reduce our dependence on far-removed industrial food. MFSC staff employ strategic thinking, investigation, and testing to improve your business or marketing plans. We incorporate your past experience with a menu of new alternatives that allow you to select the best way forward for your company. Our work with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine is indicative of the work we perform. For BCM, we provide support for the BikeMaine Ride each September with menu development, purchasing, food service supervision, and meal production. BikeMaine brings over 450 Riders on tour for seven days and provides three meals a day utilizing community groups and local foods. MFSC develops menus appropriate for the Riders calorie needs and the capacity of each town to prepare, cook, serve, and clean up after each meal. Food safety and food quality are important factors that MFSC designs into each meal and monitors during the event. Timing is of great importance as well: meals have to be served on time and rapidly to meet the needs of the ride schedule. MFSC works with the BCM to have adequate equipment, shelter, food storage, and food production facilities to provide these meals. When the community does not have the capacity to provide the meal, MFSC has the staff to prepare and cook with community support for service and cleanup. MFSC is not a caterer but can function in that arena for agro-tourism events at large scale that promote the Maine food system. Other functions include the Feeding the 5000 event in Portland as well as the Splash fundraiser for Maine Island Trails Association.
